The Brekka Age Gap Isn’t as Bad as You Think, Michael Grant Just Can’t Write Consistently
First of all, Brianna Berenson is not twelve years old. In Gone, Quinn asks Brianna [paraphrasing because I don’t have the book on hand] “aren’t you like, eleven?” and Brianna answers “I’m twelve, and I turn thirteen for a month”. There’s a three month timeskip between Gone and Hunger, so Brianna is canonically thirteen years old from Hunger onward, the majority of the series. So why does it say she’s twelve? Most likely because Michael Grant forgot. BUT I DIDN’T.
Secondly, Dekka Talent probably isn’t fifteen. My proof? The main conflict of the first and third book revolves around the Poof, the Big One-Five. One would think that if Dekka, one of our most prominent characters, had a birthday coming up, it would mention it (granted, I dont think we hear about Astrid’s 15th either, so take this with a grain of salt). Also, the books straight up never (or only toward the end, I’m not 100% sure) state her age directly, and statistically speaking, it’s far more likely she’s fourteen/turned fifteen during the later stages of the FAYZ.
So instead of Brekka being about a fifteen year old having a crush on a twelve year old, it’s about a fourteen/just-barely-fifteen year old having a crush on a thirteen year old. Do with that what you will.
